Abashidze: Ajaria Undeniable Part of Georgia

TBILISI (Itar-Tass)–Ajaria’s leader Aslan Abashidze said on Wednesday that Ajaria is an irrefutable part of the "indivisible Georgian state," and there exist no grounds for a standoff between Batumi and Tbilisi.

Speaking live on the Tbilisi-based program Imedi–Abashidze affirmed that deterioration of relations between the center and the region is caused by "interests of some politicians," but stopped short of naming names.

He noted that Georgia’s leadership during the last fourteen years outright opposed the regions–while the present leadership "actually fights against itself" in confronting regions.

Claiming that there is discord between the three top Georgian officials–President Mikhail Saakashvili–Prime Minister Zurab Zhvania–and Parliament Speaker Nino Burdzhanadze–Abashidze added–"Let no one be offended but Nino Burdzhanadze is the most balanced of the three."

In recent months–Saakashvili–Zhvania–and Burdzhanadze have consistently shrugged off claims that there is a lack of unity between them.
