Vandalism in Old Julfa Proves That Karabagh Cannot be Part of Azerbaijan

YEREVAN (Armenpress)–National Assembly vice-speaker and Armenian Revolutionary Federation (ARF) Bureau member Vahan Hovhannisian said Tuesday that although Armenia lost a great deal in the Old Julfa Armenian cemetery of Nakhichevan–these losses have helped to prove that "Karabagh as well as other Armenian-populated regions cannot be part of Azerbaijan."

According to him–through its vandalism–Azerbaijan is doing everything possible to destroy what remains of Armenian cultural–historic–and ethnic heritage on former Armenian territories that are now under Azeri rule.

Hovhannisian said that the ARF will work with all other political factions to formulate a joint position on the matter and present it to various international organizations. Noting that representatives of the opposition also joined the fight–he pointed out that there is no distinction between "opposition" and "authorities" in the struggle to protect the homeland.

Armenian Parliament speaker Arthur Baghdasarian has sent letters to the Secretary General of the Council of Europe Terry Davis and PACE Chairman Rene van der Linden in which he described the situation and demanded that relevant measures be undertaken.

Hovhannisian described the silence of ICOMOS–UNESCO–and other international organizations as "shameful."
