Armenian President Says Armenia Is Much Stronger with The Diaspora

STOCKHOLM (Armenpress)–Armenian President Robert Kocharian met Wednesday with representatives of the Stockholm Armenian community during his official visit to Sweden.

During the meeting they discussed a set of issues and particularly referred to the issue of dual citizenship. President Kocharian said that after November 2005’s constitutional reforms–there is no longer a ban on dual citizenship in Armenia. He said that a special group has been created to work on making some changes in the law on citizenship and expressed hope that the amended law will be ready by fall.

"My position has not changed. I am sure that together with the diaspora Armenia is much more powerful than without it," said Kocharian–adding that the best proof is the efforts of the diaspora to gain international recognition of the Armenian genocide.

Referring to the Karabagh conflict regulation process–Kocharian said that after the recent statemen’s of Azeri officials–he is less optimistic about upcoming negotiations with his Azeri counterpart–Ilham Aliyev.
