European Parliament Adopts Resolution Condemning Destruction of Armenian Monumen’s in Old Julfa

YEREVAN (Armenpress)–The European Parliament adopted Thursday a resolution condemning the destruction of Armenian monumen’s in Old Julfa. 85 members of the European Parliament voted for the adoption of the resolution–5 against it.

The resolution calls on Azerbaijan to stop the practice of ethnic cleansing and stresses the importance of "respect for minority rights including historical–religious–and cultural heritage."

President of the European Armenian Federation for Justice and Democracy (EAFJD)–Hilda Tchoboian noted that the resolution deman’s that Azerbaijan allow the European parliament delegation to study the case first-hand.

It says that the European Parliament–"deman’s that Azerbaijan allow missions dedicated to surveying and protecting the archaeological heritage on its territory–especially Armenian heritage–such as experts working with ICOMOS–and also allow a European Parliament delegation to visit the archaeological site at Julfa."

"It also deman’s that Azerbaijan gives explanation about what happened and the reality should be disclosed. One of the most important points is that Azerbaijan will face an issue on the protection of the cultural heritage," said Tchoboian.

During the session in parliament–the Greens–which were against the adoption of the document–suggested that a point about the destruction of Azeri monumen’s in Armenia–Karabagh–and neighboring regions be included in the resolution. Their suggestion was declined.

Tchoboian–said the Greens made such a proposal because there are some Turkish parliamentarians in the party.

"The resolution first of all is of moral importance rather than political–that is to say it should have political consequences as well in connection with Azerbaijan-EU relations," said she.
