Karabakh Defense Chief Hails Referendum

STEPANAKERT (PanArmenian)–The Nagorno-Karabakh Republic Defense Minister, Lieutenant General Seyran Ohanian told a press conference Thursday that the constitutional referendum Sunday would greatly enhance civil society and would, once again, demonstrate Karabakh’s commitment to democratic norms. He also said that in the Karabakh conflict resolution process, the necessary concessions would be made. Seyranian explained that such a decision would be made by political leaders, adding that the role of the armed forces was to protect the national security of the country. Seyranian, however, added that the territories in question in the peace talks were liberated by the Karabakh armed forces to ensure and strengthen the national security of Karabakh. The Minister said qualitative changes were implemented in the Army in 2006. Special attention was paid to combatant duty and considerable work steps were taken to improve the socio-economic condition of the forces. He added that special emphasis was placed on strengthening ties between military servicemen and civilians.
