MOSCOW (ARF Press Service)–The Armenian Revolutionary Federation was invited and participated in the inaugural congress of the newly formed "A Just Russia" party Monday. More than 300 delegates representing all regions of Russia, ahead of March 11 regional elections, took part in the Congress, which was welcomed with a statement by Russian President Vladimir Putin. The ARF was represented by the Executive Director of the Moscow Armenian National Committee Yuri Navoyan. Three Russian political parties have voted to merge into a new grouping in order to more effectively challenge the country’s main political force, the pro-Kremlin Unified Russia party. The new party has been named A Just Russia: Motherland, Pensioners, and Life. That’s because it brings together the nationalist Motherland party, the Party of Pensioners, and the Party of Life. The merger had been planned for months, but the parties officially sealed their alliance on October 28 at a founding congress in Moscow. Delegates elected Sergei Mironov, who headed the Party of Life and presides over the upper house of parliament, as leader of the new alliance. He described the party as a new "leftist political force" and a "hard opposition" to Unified Russia, which he accused of seeking to establish a political monopoly. During the Congress, Navoyan held meeting several leaders of the party including party secretary Aleksander Babakov. During that meeting Navoyan emphasized the importance a new and strong leftist party and stressed that cooperation with such a party would greatly strengthen Armenia-Russia relations. The two agreed to officially outline the cooperation between the two parties through a written declaration. In the near future, an ARF delegation will meet in Moscow to finalize such a document.
