WASHINGTON, DC (Combined Sources)–The American Business Forum in Turkey (ABFT), an Istanbul-based group, is falsely claiming that its members–including a broad range of major American corporations–are opposed to the Armenian Genocide Resolution. In response to written inquiries from the Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA) regarding their position on this human rights legislation, these corporations have indicated that they do not support and, in many instances, were not even aware of the ABFT’s use of their names to oppose US recognition of the first genocide of the 20th Century. "Microsoft has not participated in any discussions or decisions of ABFT, and was not involved with the communication to which your referred in your letters,"Microsoft states in a letter to the ANCA. Two other companies cited their explicit detachment from political issues. "As the world’s largest and most comprehensive and broadly based health care company, we would not engage in political issues of this nature,"wrote Johnson & Johnson in their response. While Cargill stressed: "We are a commercial enterprise focused on business matters rather than on political or foreign policy matters." Turkish Business groups have warned US lawmakers that passage of the Genocide Resolution would harm business relations with Turkey. In a letter to members of the US House of Representatives, the ABFT, which represents about 70 US firms operating in Turkey, cited the potential harm to investmen’s and commercial relations between the two countries. "US companies invested $4 billion in Turkey just last year. Trade between the US and Turkey shot up by 18 percent last year to a record $12 billion. American companies are helping to power the growth of the Turkish economy, which is rapidly raising standards of living here."
