Montebello City Council Marks 40th Anniversary of Armenian Martyrs Monument

MONTEBELLO– During its regular session on Wednesday, April 11, the City Council of Montebello issued a proclamation marking the 40th Anniversary of its resolution to establish a monument on public land in memory of the victims of the Armenian Genocide. The monument was erected at Bicknell Park and dedicated as the Armenian Martyrs Monument. More than hundred members of the Montebello Armenian community, along with representatives from the A.R.F. Dro Gomideh, San Gabriel Valley Armenian National Committee, clergy and Board of Trustees of Holy Cross Armenian Apostolic Church, Armenian Youth Federation, Armenian Relief Society, Homenetmen, and Mesrobian School students. Also present were members of the Monument Council. Mayor Norma Lopez-Reid, in presence of Council Members, Monument Council representative Michael Minassian and ANC chairman Viken Pakradouni, read the text of the proclamation and presented it to the Monument Council. After the presentation, Viken Pakradouni thanked the Mayor and the council members and invited them to attend the political rally/vigil organized by the ANC on April 23rd at the Armenian Martyrs Monument. Commenting on the issuance of the proclamation, Viken Pakradouni stated, The Montebello City Council has persistently taken courageous stand on Armenian issues. Forty years ago, it defied pressures of the Turkish Ambassador to the U.S. and resolved to erect the Genocide Monument. Two years ago it defied the pressures of the Azerbaijani Ambassador to the U.S. and resolved to become a sister city with Stepanakert, the capital of independent republic of Nagorno-Karabagh. The ANC chairman added, We thank our City Council, and we are proud of them.
