Schiff Names Jarahian Woman of the Year in the 29th Congressional District

WASHINGTON–A reception in Pasadena, Representative Adam Schiff honored Jasik Jasmen Jarahian earlier this month for her commitment and service to Glendale by naming her a Woman of the Year. Jasmen’s work in our community is an ideal illustration of ARSs goal of always striving for something larger than ourselves, said Schiff. Simply put she is a true inspiration. Jarahian was born in Iran and moved to Glendale in 1984. Since 1991, she has been the general accountant/controller for the Armenian Relief Society of the Western United States of America (ARS). Jarahians efforts have helped the Armenian Relief Society provide philanthropic assistance to isolated villages in Armenia and Artsakh (Karabakh). For almost 100 years, the Armenian Relief Society has brought women together to laugh or cry, cook or eat, learn or teach, always serving, always striving for something larger than ourselves. In addition to her work with the Armenian Relief Society, Jarahian is an active member of Homenetmen (Armenian General Athletic Union). She is a founding member of the Davtian-Meyramian Educational Foundation, a non-profit organization that organizes after-school programs that promote education and multiculturalism for children in elementary and middle school. Jarahian also does volunteer work with the Armenian Bone Marrow Donor Registry Project, a group whose mission is to recruit and provide matched unrelated donors for bone marrow or stem cell transplantation for patients that are suffering from leukemia or other blood related illnesses. She was named Mother of the Year by the North Hollywood ARS Meghri Chapter and was deemed an Honorary Artsakh Citizen by the Dzaghgatsogh Village. Jarahian became an honorary citizen after several years of leading efforts to renovate Dzaghgatsogh Village, including the museum, the local hall and school. Jarahian spends her free time mentoring women and enjoys inspiring others to volunteer. Every March, during Women’s History Month, Rep. Schiff honors one outstanding woman from each of the communities in the 29th Congressional District. These women come from all walks of life and represent the thousands of women who make a positive impact in our region. While there are no specific criteria for nomination, Rep. Schiff looks for women who through their work or volunteerism have improved the quality of life for our community. Rep. Schiff represents Californias 29th Congressional District, which includes the communities of Alhambra, Altadena, Burbank, Glendale, Monterey Park, Pasadena, San Gabriel, South Pasadena and Temple City.
