YEREVAN (ARF Press Service)–Armenian Revolutionary Federation Bureau member Mario Nalbandian and ARF Supreme Council of Armenia chairman Armen Rustamian Saturday met with Iraqi President Jalal Talebani in Geneva.
The meeting, which took place on the sidelines of the Socialist International Council meeting, centered on the security and the needs of the Armenian community in Iraq.
Talebani pledged to meet with representatives of the Iraqi-Armenian community to discuss relevant issues.
The Socialist International Conference took place on Friday and Saturday at the headquarters of the International Labor Union under the banner of “Work for World Peace and Stability ‘s World without Conflicts.”
Around 400 representatives from 120 parties and organizations from different countries participated in the session, among them Nalbandian and Rustamian.
The ARF Press service reported that Rustamian presented a report, entitled “South Caucasus Conflicts.”
Addressing the political reality that the region was mistakenly being viewed as one entity by the international community, Rustamian said: “Here the three republics are on different levels of development–as state units, as democratic systems and as economies.” He cited the results of U.S. analytical centers according to which in the list of “Failed Countries” Georgia is 58th, Azerbaijan 62d and Armenia 112th.
Rustamian also said that the three conflicts in the region–Nagorno Karabakh, Abkhazia and South Ossetia–also were different in nature.
“If we have a closer look at each of them we will see that they are different. The conflicts are different by their origins, their manifestations and today’s picture but the most important aspect was the respect for the right to self-determination of the peoples. Peace talks for each conflict have different formats, thus the resolution of each will require different approaches,” explained Rustamian.
The ARF leader pointed to Turkey as having a negative impact on the conflict resolution processes, citing its refusal to establish diplomatic relations with and blockade of Armenia as it seeks to enter the European Union.
Rustamian said that the country which has committed genocide against Armenia’s, was not putting forth pre-conditions for establishing diplomatic relations. Moreover, he said, Turkey was actively involved in the regional initiatives of isolating Armenia.
Underscoring the role of Socialist International, he called on the delegates to undertake initiatives that would prevent isolation of states.
