Official Says Prerequisites Exist for Karabakh Independence Recognition

YEREVAN (Armenpress)–The recent visits of Armenian and Azeri intellectuals to Armenia, Nagorno Karabakh and Azerbaijan was an attempt to cover or compensate for the unsuccessful meeting between the Armenian and Azeri presidents, said Karabakh presidential advisor Arman Melikian at a press conference Thursday.
According to Melikian, the meeting was particularly significant for Karabakh since the Azeri Ambassador to Russia was “under the Karabakh flag and met with the president of the republic.”
“The important aspect for us was that the Azeri ambassador met with the legal authorities of Karabakh and spoke about the reconciliation of the sides. In this respect it may be said that Azerbaijan accepts the legitimacy of the Karabakh authorities,” Melikian said.
Commenting on the agreement by the Azeris to participate in the initiative, Melikian said that “Azeris understood that without negotiating with the people of Karabakh and without receiving their agreement, no progress may be expected in the conflict resolution process.”
He said that if this line of visits continue “perhaps there will not be sense to negotiate with Azerbaijan. As stated yesterday by the Karabakh president we will just deal with the process of international recognition of Karabakh. The independence of Karabakh will be recognized as I see the geopolitical prerequisites for it,” Melikian said.
