YEREVAN (Armenpress)–After wrapping up a working visit to Georgia and on his way back home from Georgia’s resort town of Batumi, where he discussed opening of Armenian consulate, foreign minister Vartan Oskanian Saturday visited the predominantly Armenian populated region of Javakhk in southern Georgia to meet with its leadership and Armenian activists.
His first stop was the town of Akhaltskha, where Oskanian visited the Armenian Holy Cross Church and then met with Armenian members of the Georgian parliament elected from this region. The meeting was also attended by prominent local Armenia’s.
The Armenian foreign ministry said during the meeting Oskanian spoke at length about Armenia’s foreign policy priorities, Armenian-Georgian relations, about upcoming joint Armenian-Georgian projects and also took questions from the audience.
During the second half of the day in Lori, Armenia, Oskanian met with foreign diplomats and heads of international organizations stationed in Georgia.
The visit was initiated by Armenian ambassador to Georgia, Hrachya Silvanian, in order to give diplomats an opportunity to see the Armenian region’s historical monumen’s and cultural legacy, as well as to see the industrial potential of local enterprises.
The diplomats, accompanied by Lori governor Aram Kocharian and heads of the Georgian and Gugarats dioceses of the Armenian Church, visited the Haghpat and Sanahin monasteries, the Alaverdi copper plant and other sites.
