Suspects in Mutafyan Assassination Plot Released

ISTANBUL (Marmara)–Two suspects who stormed the Armenian Patriarchate during Hrant Dink’s 40-day memorial were released Tuesday, despite admitting that they were at the religious headquarters to assassinate Istanbul Patriarch Archbishop Mesrob Mutafyan.
During the preliminary hearing in early July, Volkan Karaova and Yilmaz Can Euzal testified that they entered the Patriarchate compound to avoid a confrontation with the leader of an alleged local prostitution ring.
At the next hearing, Euzal said that they had made the aforementioned statement to escape punishment and clarified that they had gone to the compound to assassinate the Patriarch.
The court Tuesday released the two on their own recognizance presumably until the resumption of the trial on October.
