YEREVAN–California Trade Office Director Dr. Khachatryan recently met with the newly appointed Armenian Minister of Trade and Economic Director Nerses Yeritsyan. Dr. Khachatryan briefed the Minister about the mission of the Trade Office, its activities and future plans. Minister Yersitsyan spelled out the plans of the Government and his Ministry to spur the trade relations between Armenia and other countries as well. He also outlined the industries that can become the backbone of the Armenian economy.
Khachatryan congratulated Yeritsyan for assuming the high position and wished him the very best of success. He advised the Minister that the strategy of the Trade Office has been recently changed that it is targeting a few large multinational companies to attract them to Armenia. Towards this end, Khachatryan mentioned the projects CATO currently works on. The projects underway include service and hospitality industry companies as well as large manufacturers. Minister Yeritsyan pledged his full support to CATO and promised to assist the Californian companies that face problems in Armenia.
On his turn, Minister Yeritsyan shared his views about the sectors of the economy that have the highest potential, particularly mentioning tourism and information technologies. The Minister also mentioned that he was planning to transform his Ministry into an agency that provides value added services to the enterprises. On this account, Mr. Yeritsyan mentioned that he would appreciate assistance from the Californian Business, Transportation and Housing Agency particularly noting that he would appreciate it if CATO would be able to bridge the two agencies.
Several other issues of mutual interest were discussed as well. At the end, both parties agreed to expand the relations between the Ministry of Economic Development and CATO.
“We wish Minister Nerses Yeritsyan, his staff, and the Armenian government the best of luck in strengthening the economic ties between the Great State of California, Armenia and the CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States),” said Johny Nalbandian, CATO’s L.A. Satellite Office International Trade Specialist.
