Nearly two decades have passed since the devastating earthquake of 1988 and the start of Artsakh’s struggle for self-determination. During those turbulent times, thousands of children became orphans or were left with only a single parent. To address the strife and struggle facing these children, the Armenian Relief Society established the “Sponsor-A-Child” program in 1992 to help relieve some of their pain and suffering.
Now on the threshold of our centennial, we can proudly report that thanks to the generosity of our hundreds of sponsors and the tireless efforts of ARS entities all over the world, the “Sponsor-A-Child” program has helped sustain the lives of over 7,500 orphans during the past 15 years. The program remains in effect and now serves nearly 3,500 orphans who receive an annual sponsorship contribution.
Nevertheless, we cannot stop here because there is still work to be done.
The majority of the orphans aided by the “Sponsor-A-Child” program have now grown and reached an age when they must prepare for their future and enter Armenia’s workforce as productive citizens. With this fact in mind, the ARS 68th International Convention established the ARS Orphans Education Program to help cover the educational expenses of the orphans who received assistance under the ARS “Sponsor-A-Child” program. The ARS Orphans Education Program will rely on its current “Sponsor-A-Child” sponsors and new sponsors to undertake supporting the college education of an orphan by allocating $320 a year’sor more’sfor this goal.
We are confident that all ARS supporters will include a donation to the ARS Orphans Education Program during this time of giving. In this spirit, the ARS, Inc. Central Executive Board calls upon all of our community members to make the New Year brighter for the “graduates” of the ARS “Sponsor-A-Child” program and help us fulfill their educational hopes and dreams by making a generous contribution to the ARS Orphans Education Program.
