YEREVAN (Yerkir)–The Armenian community of Iran has been circulating information packets and DVDs to diplomatic representatives and government officials throughout Iran informing them of the ongoing destruction by Azerbaijan of the medieval Armenian cemetery in Old Djulfa (Nachijevan), IA Regnum reported.
For the past 15 years, the ancient Armenian cemetery and historical monumen’s located at the Nachijevan-Iran border have been the victim of a systematic campaign of destruction, sponsored and supported by the government of Azerbaijan, according to Derenik Melikian, editor-in-chief of the Tehran-based Armenian newspaper, Aliq.
Azeri troops razed the cemetery to the ground in December 2005. The destruction was caught on tape by priests of the Atropaten Diocese in Iran. In January 2006, the European Parliament passed a resolution condemning Azerbaijan’s barbarism. The land where the Armenian cemetery used to be is currently a shooting range for the Azeri Defense Ministry, Melikian said.
