Fresno’s Charlie Keyan Armenian Community School Holds 5th Annual Crab Feed

FRESNO–The Charlie Keyan Armenian Community School hosted its 5th Annual Crab Feed on February 9 at the Holy Trinity Armenian Church in Fresno. The event drew over 400 guests who were treated to an all-you-can eat crab and pasta dinner.
The Crab Feed has quickly become the school’s primary fundraiser and features several celebrities from the community. This year, KMPH Great Day co-host Kopi Sotiropulos emceed the after-dinner program, while NCAA-champion coach Jerry Tarkanian, former Fresno City councilman and current mayoral candidate Tom Boyadjian, and KSEE sportscaster Alexan Balekian were guest-servers. Balekian also performed a live interview with Tarkanian and Boyadjian for his weekend sports show. The crowd danced to the music of the 1970s played by rhythm and blues band Papa Bear and Company.
After dinner, Sotiropulos auctioned-off several prized items, including a personal 4-course dinner prepared by Chef Varouj of Bistro Rustico and Kasabella Catering, a 1957 bottle of Ficklin Port from Agajanian Vineyards, an 18k White gold ring donated by Dan Jelladian and family, and a diamond earring cuff set from Ara Karkazian Jewelers. Donaghy Sales donated eight skybox seats to the upcoming Hawaii vs. Fresno State basketball game, where the ticket holders will be joined by coach Tarkanian.
In addition to the live auction, almost 100 individuals, business, and local artists contributed their goods, services, and art work to a silent auction. Donaghy Sales and Agajanian Vineyards provided the beer and wine while Kasabella Catering prepared the linguini for the family style meal.
Ara Karkazian, vice-chairman of the education board, thanked all those that have given their support to the event as well as the families who have made the commitment to send their children to the Armenian Community School.
Proceeds from the Crab Feed will help offset the school’s general operating expenses and the construction costs of its new Clovis campus. Last June, the Armenian Community School received an unprecedented endowment from philanthropist Charlie Keyan to purchase land for a new school site. Chairman Jerry Kutumian reported that the new facilities will be ready in early March. Kutumian particularly acknowledged Precision Engineering, which has donated $20,000 of materials and services towards the construction of the new school.
In recent years, the Crab Feed has been so well-received by the broader community that the Crab Committee is considering holding the event at a larger venue next year. For more information about the Armenian Community School, please call Principal Rosie Bedrosian at 559-233-1800.
