STEPANAKERT (Armenpress)–President of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic Bako Sahakian met with The chairman-in-office of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, Finnish Foreign Minister Ilkka Kanerva on Tuesday to discuss Karabakh peace negotiations, the President’s press office said.
"It was our first meeting and I consider it effective," Sahakian said. "Together with the OSCE chairman in office we spoke about the process of negotiations and asked him to use his authority to restore the decision of the Budapest summit and include Karabakh as a full side in the negotiation process," Sahakian said at a press conference following the meeting.
The main roadblock to the negotiations process is the non-participation of Karabakh at the discussion table, according to Sahakian, who said there can be no logical or lasting resolution without Karabakh’s participation
President Sahakian also noted that Karabakh is still interested in the continuation of Armenia’s participation in the process "as it ensures today’s peace."
"As an OSCE chairing country, Finland is seeking the constructive regulation of the conflict," Kanerva said as he called on Armenia and Azerbaijan to engage in dialogue in order to resolve the tension that surfaced following the 19 February presidential election.
Kanerva also noted, that aside from the settlement of the Karabakh Conflict, the OSCE is also very interested in the promotion of democratic processes in the South Caucasus.
In other news, Kanerva also met with Armenian Foreign Minister Vartan Oskanian Tuesday to discuss the latest developmen’s in the efforts to settle the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
The two Foreign Ministers discussed the current state of the talks, possible future developmen’s and possibilities for resumption of the talks between the Armenian and Azerbaijani presidents.
Oskanian told reporters during a press conference following the meeting that the OSCE Minsk group has indicated its readiness to begin working on arrangemen’s for a meeting between the two presidents.
Kanerva said the OSCE will continue its support for the Minsk Group’s efforts. According to the OSCE Chairman, it is very important that the peace process moves ahead. It is in Armenia’s interests that a final settlement is found to the dispute, he told reporters.
