YEREVAN (Combined Sources)–The Central Election Commission announced Monday the final results of the February 19 presidential elections according to which Armenian Prime Minister Serzh Sarkisian became the third president of the Republic of Armenia 52.82 percent of the votes.
According to the Armenian Constitution, the newly elected president will assume his commitmen’s on April 9 when Robert Kocharian will end his presidential authorities. Armenian law also requires that the president accept the resignation of the government on that day. The members of the government, are however, mandated to continue with their duties until the formation of a new government.
After accepting the resignation of the government, the Armenian President appoints a prime minister; after which the new prime minister has 20 days to form a government.
Arman Musinyan, a press secretary for Ter-Petrosyan’s central campaign office during a press conference Tuesday said that former president Levon Ter-Petrosyan has sent a letter of intent to the Constitutional Court, announcing that he will appeal the election results in the country’s highest court.
He also said that Ter-Petrosyan will continue his protest rallies in a Yerevan square.
Addressing tens of thousands of people in Republican Square Tuesday, Prime Minister Serzh Sarkisian congratulated the country for a successful presidential election. The country and its people have a very good opportunity now to start resolving many of their pressing issues, he said.
Sarkisian said he and his supporters rallied today to cure a wound on "our body" caused by this election. He said all must work to overcome this trial and help the wound heal as soon as possible.
"I swear to do everything in my power to justify your trust in me," he told rally-goers Tuesday, some of whom were bussed out to Yerevan or forced to attend by school administrators. "I assure you that you will not be disappointed by casting your ballot for me."
Sarkisian pledged that his government will overcome poverty and will fight evil and indifference. He said the split among people will be also overcome. He will defend the right to freedom of speech but added that does not mean freedom to slander. He also said that he will defend the right to assembly but added that does not mean collapse of the stability in the Yerevan.
