YEREVAN (Armenpress)–Armenian Foreign Minister Vartan Oskanian Wednesday praised the Vatican for supporting Armenia as it seeks to find a solution to its current political situation.
Since Armenia gained independence from the Soviet Union, Armenia has always felt the support of the Vatican, he said, noting the erecting of a monument of Gregory the Illuminator at the Vatican.
Oskanian made the remarks as he welcomed Vatican’s State Secretary Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone to Yerevan on Tuesday.
Cardinal Bertone said his visit to Armenia at this difficult time is to express his support to the people of Armenia.
Oskanian also stressed the role of the Armenian Mkhetarian Catholic Congregation in Venice in the development of bilateral relations between Armenia and the Vatican.
Cardinal Bertone was received by Prime Minister Serzh Sarkisian Tuesday, after which he joined His Holiness Catholicos Karekin II to pray for return of peace and stability to Armenia.
