Presidential Spokesperson Assesses Events in Armenia

YEREVAN (Armradio)–Armenian Presidential Spokesman Viktor Soghomonian told reporters during a press conference Friday that Ter-Petrosian’s representatives have yet to file any electoral fraud claims with Armenia’s Administrative Court.
Soghomonian stated that no new argumen’s and documen’s have been presented during the Constitutional Court hearings on the election results
"This means that they either did not have facts and real argumen’s, or, which is worse, the candidate and his team were not even going to take the legal path," Viktor Soghomonian stated. According to him, this is evidenced by the fact that that Ter-Petrosian’s supporters tried to seize power with the use of force on March 1.
Soghomonian also noted that despite assertions by Ter-Petrosian’s supporters that he is under house arrest, the former president continues to participate at the Constitutional Court’s hearings on the February 19 election.
Soghomonian also defended the government’s decision not to lift the state of emergency before the 20-day timetable set by Kocharian.
Commenting on recent suggestions by international organizations to end emergency measures in Armenia, Soghomonian said the authorities are responsible for the security of Armenia’s citizens and all decisions regarding the state of emergency will be made in consideration of the realities Armenia faces. The restrictions placed on the media are temporary, he added.
According to him, Friday’s meetings between Armenian leaders and the US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Matthew Bryza, EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus Peter Semenby and PACE representative John Prescott, have clarified the post-election events in Armenia.
"The world now has a clear idea of what really happened in Armenia on March 1st and 2nd," he said.
