MOSCOW–The brunt of the discussions between Armenia’s president-elect and Russian leaders earlier this week centered on regional security and defense issues, according to an analysis published Wednesday in the Moscow-based Moskovskaya Gazeta.
According to the newspaper, President-Elect Serzh Sarkissian, Russian President and Russian President-Elect Vladimir Putin and Dmitry Medvedev discussed the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict resolution process, NATO expansion issues, as well as military capabilities.
One topic of conversation during the meetings was Armenia’s upcoming presidency of CIS Collective Security Organization. This will be the topic of presentation Sarkissian is scheduled to make in Bucharest next week. According to information obtained by Moskovskaya Gazeta, the Kremlin received assurances that the positions of the two sides on regional security matters do not differ. In return, the Kremlin, reportedly pledged to honor an earlier agreement on providing military aid to Armenia.
In discussing the Karabakh conflict, the newspaper opined that Russian leaders warned Armenia about rising tensions in the region, knowing full well that Sarkissian intends to apply the Kosovo precedent to the Karabakh conflict resolution process.
Relations between Moscow and Baku are already tense and Russia’s indisputable siding with Armenia on the Karabakh issue could drive Azerbaijan closer to strengthening relations with NATO.
