GLENDALE–The honoree, Garn Yegparian received this citation for organizing hikes with government officials, members of school boards, city councils, community college boards, state assembly, state senate, Congress, as well as senior municipal staff, a county supervisor and California’s attorney general. The hikes were mostly in the Verdugo Mountains of Southern California, familiarizing the officials with the landscape and the threats to it.
Ample food and good spirits combined to stimulate energetic discussion with each of the guests regarding broad swaths of current issues.
The awards committee evidently disregarded Yegparian’s disclaimer, “I only stole the idea from Sierra Club founder John Muir, after seeing the iconic picture of him and Teddy Roosevelt atop Half Dome in Yosemite National Park.”
The presentation was made at the chapter’s annual Awards Banquet on Sunday May 4 at the Brookside Country Club (in the Rose Bowl) along with the recognition given to numerous other Sierra Club activists supporting the organization’s efforts in the conservation, outings, and political arenas.
