Each May, the Asbarez English Section celebrates its anniversary. From the first edition of the English Section, the aim of the publication was to reach out to English-speaking members of the community–especially the youth–as well non-Armenian readers–political officials, stakeholders and the activist community.
In 1993, the Asbarez English Section became a daily publication and became an arena of information, news and opinion five days a week. At the same time, Asbarez made the strategic decision to bring the English section to the front of its Weekend/Saturday Edition to engage the English reading audience further into the realm of our newspaper.
As Asbarez turns 100 this year, it continues to work toward reaching a wider audience through innovative and more accessible avenues. In 1997, Asbarez became the first Armenian publication to launch a Web site, expanding the reach of its news and information and engaging a worldwide audience. Asbarez upgraded its Web site last year, making it more user friendly, including an Armenian section and offering its archives on line.
Beginning on Monday, the weekday English section of Asbarez will be available exclusively on and we will cease publication of the English supplement in the print edition. Beginning next week, the Asbarez English Section will offer a more expanded print edition and will continue to provide content on the Web.
This move heralds a new chapter in our 100-year-old history, as we look at the internet as a medium for information, news and opinion. Our Web site has a consistently growing readership and offers the reader the opportunity to tailor-make his/her experience with Asbarez. Readers may register to receive urgent bulletins, daily updates and may subscribe to our RSS feed for continuous updates. As this initiative progresses, we will offer more web-exclusive content and an opportunity for readers to participate in the newspaper process. Our website also offers our community organizations and businesses the opportunity to advertise and reach a more technologically-advanced audience.
