YEREVAN (Armenpress)–Armenia’s Prosecutor General Tuesday opened a criminal case against a local prosecutor’s aide accused of accepting large bribes as payment for suspending local investigations.
According to the Press Office of the Armenian Prosecutor General, the accused individual, Hakob Simonian is aide to the Arabkir and Kanaker-Zeitun local Prosecutor. On April 28, Yerevan resident Samvel Gareginian submitted a statement to the National Security Services, which said he witnessed Simonian demand a $12,000 bribe from his friend Hrachya Karapetian, explained the Prosecutor General’s Press Secretary Sona Truzian.
Karapetian, who lives in Germany was told that in exchange for the said amount, Simonian would suspend a search into an investigation into his son, Alexander Karapetian, who is wanted for evading military service.
According to Gareginian’s statement, the bribe was also meant to clear Karapetian of his obligation to serve in the military.
Truzian said that Simonian had already received $8,000 and was awaiting the second portion of the payment.
The criminal case has been sent to Armenia’s special investigation service, she explained
