YEREVAN (Armenpress)–An exhibit in honor of the heroic battles that ushered in the birth of the First Republic of Armenia in 1918 opened Wednesday at the National Archives of Armenia.
The exhibit, entitled, "the May Battles and the First Republic of Armenian," is part of a series of events dedicated to the 90th anniversary of the independence of Armenia, which was proclaimed amid Genocide in Ottoman Turkey and Revolution in the Tsarist Russian Empire.
Items on display at the exhibit depict the heroic battle of Sardarapat, Bash-Aparan and Karakilisa fought against the invading Turkish army in 1918.
The grand opening was attended by Deputy Territorial Minister Arsen Grigorian, an aide to Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan, the President of Yerevan State University Aram Simonian, as well as a number historians and army officers.
Apart from several military directives and order, only a few documen’s about the battle of Sardarapat exist, according to Director of the National Archives Amatuni Virabian. Memoirs of many who participated in the battle, are however, on display, he noted.
During the opening of the exhibit, Director of the Golden Apricot Film Festival Harutyun Khachatrian handed to Virabian an award from the London Kurdish Film Festival. The Kurdish festival has been cooperating with the Golden Apricot festival in screening documentaries housed in the Armenian National Archives that tell that tell the stories of Armenia’s, Kurds and Yezidis.
