Las Vegas Armenians Celebrate Opening of AYF ‘Sosse Mayrig’ Chapter

The new members of the Sosse Mayrig Chapter take the ceremonial to uphold the values of the Armenian Youth Federation

LAS VEGAS–The Las Vegas “Sosse Mayrig” Chapter of the Armenian Youth Federation was officially inaugurated on Saturday when 10 new members joined the AYF to create the newest chapter of the Western Region.

Nearly 100 youth and community members from California and Nevada were present for the the chapter’s inaugural event and oath ceremony.

The oath ceremony was presided over by AYF Central Executive Vice Chairperson Vache Thomassian and Las Vegas “Ishkhan” Gomide member Razmig Libarian.

In his remarks to the group Thomassian stressed the important role youth play in the development and enhancement of Armenian communities as well as the Armenian Cause.

Regarding the name of the new chapter Thomassian stated, “Sosse Vartanian was a strong willed, dedicated and resolute woman whose characteristics are reflected by the founding members of this chapter.”

Libarian, the Godfather of the ceremony went on to explain to the youth that their hard work bringing the chapter together is only the first step in their efforts to come. Libarian then proceeded with the oath ceremony, through which the youth pledged to devote their energies toward achieving a free, independent and united Armenia. To mark the historic event, the AYF Central Executive presented each new member with a symbolic gift and presented the chapter with its chapter flag.

Following the oath ceremony a kickoff party was held at Stefano’s restaurant where the new AYF members, joined by Las Vegas Armenian community members celebrated the milestone.

“Sosse Mayrig” member Carnie Armenian emphasized that, “We are all excited to get to work and to make a difference in the Las Vegas community. It is encouraging to see AYF members from California come out to support our chapter’s opening ceremony and we look forward to working together to further our goals.”

“It is great to see the commitment and drive that the Las Vegas members have shown; going through the AYF educational program, learning about the history and goals of the AYF and coming together to establish our 14th chapter is a monumental accomplishment and we look forward to great works to come” stated AYF Central Executive member Ara Malakian.
