Georgia Accuses Russia of Violating Airspace

TBILISI (AP)–Georgian officials say Russian military helicopters have repeatedly violated the nation’s air space over the past day.

The Russian Air Force denied the claim.

The Georgian Interior Ministry says in a statement that Russian helicopters buzzed over police checkpoints near a Georgian village not far from the breakaway province of Abkhazia.

It said the intrusions took place Wednesday and Thursday and the helicopters photographed the Georgian positions.

Russia formally recognized the independence of Abkhazia and another breakaway region, South Ossetia, after its August war with Georgia.

Moscow has thousands of troops deployed in the two regions.
