Speculations Emerge on Possible Turkish Envoy to Armenia

ANKARA (Combined Sources)–Turkey’s Ambassador to Georgia, Ertan Tezgor, may likely be appointed as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Armenia, reported the tumgazeteler.com website on Wednesday.

But the final decision, as to who is appointed to represent Turkey in Armenia will come after Armenian President Serzh Sarkisian’s visit to Turkey in October, according to Sabina Freizer, the Caucasus Project Director of the International Crisis Group (ICG).

Commenting on the speculations, Armenian Foreign Ministry Spokesman, Tigran Balayan, said Wednesday that there is no use speaking about the appointment of an ambassador until diplomatic relations are established between Armenia and Turkey.

“Today, all exchanges between the two countries go through the Armenian and Turkish embassies in Georgia,” Balayan said, noting that he thinks Ertan Tezgor is already the de facto link between the two countries.

When asked whether the authorities in Yerevan would be able to ensure the security of the future Turkish ambassador, Balayan said only that the “sides are obliged to guarantee the security of the diplomatic corps under the Vienna agreement.”
