LOMITA, CA–With strength and purpose, dozens of South Bay Armenian American grassroots volunteers gathered for an orientation session focused on Marcy Winograd’s race against Democratic incumbent Congresswoman Jane Harman. The gathering, held at the Armenian Center in Lomita, California, brought together a diverse number of leading Armenian American activists. These activists are ardently supporting Winograd, who is challenging longtime Congresswoman Jane Harman (D-36) in the Democratic primary that will take place on June 8, 2010.
The campaign orientation session brought together community activist who are resolved to make an impact on the South Bay Congressional primary. The orientation included precinct details, background information about each candidate, new voter registration forms, volunteer sign up sheets, and distribution of walking sheets for different precincts.
“I believe that walking the precincts and knocking neighbors’ doors to spread Marcy’s message is crucial in this campaign,” explained Shant Baboujian who resides in California’s 36th Congressional District. “Jane Harman has lost touch with her constituents and the issues that we care about – be it health care, cracking down on corporate fraud and big pensions or even her misguided support of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.”
Harman is the second richest member of Congress and was first elected to the body in 1992. In 2006, Winograd garnered almost 38% percent of the primary vote after deciding to challenge Harman only months before the primary.
“South Bay residents deserve someone who represents working class Americans and not special interest lobbyists,” added Baboujian.
The South Bay Armenian American Community is planning a public town hall meeting with Marcy Winograd that will take place on Sunday, February 28, 2010. The town hall meeting will be held at 5 p.m. at the South Bay Armenian Center located at 2222 Lomita Boulevard in Lomita, California.
