Washington Still Pushing for Ratification of Protocols

WASHINGTON (News.am)—The United States continues to press Armenia and Turkey to move forward and ratify fence mending agreements signed by their foreign ministers last October, US Assistant Secretary of State Philip told a daily news conference on Monday.

Crowley said Washington was pushing for the normalization of relations between the two estranged countries despite a recent vote by the US House Committee on Foreign Affairs to approve the Armenian Genocide resolution. He said the administration regretted the decision and was hoping Ankara would send its recalled ambassador back to Washington.

“We understand the reasons why Turkey recalled its ambassador, and we hope that the ambassador will be returned as quickly as Turkey feels comfortable,” he said, adding that it’s up to Turkey to decide on returning its Ambassador to Washington.

Ankara, he added, is “playing an increasingly important role in the region. And they are clearly linked to something we have spent a lot of time and attention focused on, which is improving relations between Turkey and Armenia.”
