YEREVAN—The State Departments point person for Europe and Eurasia was in the Azerbaijani capital of Baku on Wednesday on the first leg of a regional visit to the South Caucasus that will end with a visit to the Armenian capital on Friday.
US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Tina Kaidanow met in Baku with Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev and Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov.
Speaking to reporters following her talks, Kaidanow said Washington is actively working with its international partners to find a solution to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
“We are very active and are greatly connected to the issue, we can say we are actively occupied with the process with the two other [Minsk Group] Co-Chairs, like the two countries involved in the process,” she said.
Kaidanow also spoke about US-Azeri relations, commenting on recent anti-American statements from Baku. “The US greatly cares for its military partnership with Azerbaijan and is looking forward to having a good and efficient partnership.”
Kaidanow will meet on Friday with Armenian President Serzh Sarkisian and Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian for similar talks, which will likely include the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. RFE/RL quoted Sarkisian’s spokesman Thursday as saying that the two will also discuss US-Armenian ties.

Hye Serge/Edward,
Don’t agree to anything – as already we know Kaidanow (USA State Department) is caught up with the Azeris oil industry – and since we have not oil in Haiastan we will not be treated, morally, but instead,
the politics of oil shall be speaking to you. As for any ‘ties’ to the USA, find out what these are – and tell
Kaidanow – we’ll let you know, when/if Haiastan agrees, or not. Manooshag
Don’t buy or trust everything that the USA tells us or wants us to do, we all know where their real interests lie, not with Armenia or the Armenian people, they have been paying lip service to us that’s all.
