Armenian Parliament Shooting Convict Dies

YEREVAN (Combined Sources)–One of the seven men convicted in a 1999 deadly attack on Armenia’s parliament was found dead in his prison cell at the weekend. Armenian prison authorities said they have launched an investigation to ascertain the cause of Hamlet Stepanian’s sudden death.

They did not announce any results of the inquiry as of Monday evening. Police reported no traces of foul play. Armenia Now reported that officials assume that a heart attack was the cause of death, but noted that some human rights activists cast doubts on that explanation.

Stepanian, who was found dead in his bunk, died halfway though his 14-year prison term. He was jailed for allegedly helping five gunmen burst into the National Assembly and spray it with bullets on October 27, 1999. The then Prime Minister Vazgen Sarkisian, parliament speaker Karen Demirchian and six other officials were killed in the shooting spree that thrust Armenia’s government into turmoil.

Vram Galstian, another of the attackers, committed suicide in his jail cell in 2004.

There seems to be endless deaths in prison and police stations, You don’t need to be a rocket scientist to know that they are the work of the present corrupt government who will do everything to stay in power and enrich their pockets, I am not even mentioning their disastrous foreign policy, i.e. the treacherous protocols,Artsakh, they are all up for sale for these crooks and their oligarchs.

mihrank: you don’t have a clue what you’re talking about. Of all the Presidents and governments that Armenia has had since 1991, Serj’s team is the best. This may not mean much to you, but it does should a progress toward something better than ltp’s hell on earth.

I have no time for corrupt bunch of crooks whoever they are, I agree that LTP was the worst, but that doesn’t mean these are any good, they are as bad as each other.

By the way I do know what I am talking about.

There are many theories as to why this man did what he did. The truth will come out one day.
I think his cell should be given to hnourary LTP.

Once our people get rid of the cancerous group of oligarchs that seem to be sucking every ounce of goodness form our fragile economy than Armenian will remain as it is, a land governed by thugs, despots, criminals and crime syndicates. And please dont insult my intelligence by telling me much has changed.

An investment group that worked in Armenia that had ‘ Concrete” government support was ripped off over a 4 year period by current and past governments. The government may change but not the thugs behind them.
