YEREVAN (RFE/RL)–The Armenian-Azerbaijani war is unlikely to resume any time soon despite the latest upsurge in ceasefire violations around Nagorno-Karabakh, Britain’s ambassador to Armenia said on Monday.
“I wouldn’t want to speculate about the possibility of war in Karabakh,” Charles Lonsdale told a news conference in Yerevan. “Recent incidents raise concern, but I think we are a long way from a resumption of real hostilities.”
Lonsdale said at the same time that the status quo in the Karabakh conflict may not be sustainable in the long term and that both sides should pursue a peaceful settlement based on mutual compromise.
Tensions along the main Armenian-Azerbaijani line of contact seems to have risen since the June 18-19 firefight in northeastern Karabakh that left one Azerbaijani and four Armenian soldiers dead. The incident was followed by fresh Azerbaijani threats to resolve the conflict by force.
“The use of force and this sort of incident is clearly unacceptable,” Lonsdale said, commenting on the deadly clash. “And I have to say both sides should refrain from the use of force.”
The diplomat said the incident underlined the need for further progress in the Armenian-Azerbaijani peace talks mediated by the United States, Russia and France. Britain continues to support the existing format of the negotiating process conducted under the aegis of the OSCE Minsk Group co-chaired by the three powers, he added.

is Uk ambassdor guarranties security of Artsakh,(Karabakh)?we have irrantional Aliyev who make idiotic dicisions in a moments notice.without care of what will be the outcome.
Why are this idiots continually insisting the violation was from bilateral with comments like “both sides need to calm down”. Hey, OPEN OUR EYES, AZERI soldiers CROSSED the line of contact and ATTACKED an Armenian defensive position, don’t pathetically try and downplay this reality by spinning the facts from unilateral aggression into bilateral aggression.
But worry not, Armenians are ready for real bilateral aggression for the next war, and this time we will not stop for Russia, the US, or the EU, instead victory celebrations will take place in Aliyev’s living room.
Dear Ambassador Charles Lonsdale:
We won the war in 1992-1994. We cannot and will not give an inch of land back to the “azeri” pogroms/nationality, whatever you want to call it. If Armenia secedes from the surrounding lands attached to Armenia and Artsakh (formerly known as Nagorno-Karapakh), it shall be the end of both Armenia’s sovereignty and the people of Artsakh will be extremely endangered. You should understand that the “azeris” are very backward, fascist and a pogromal society, and they will constantly at any given time attack our peaceloving, Christian Armenians in Artsakh and kill them. The land of Artsakh, Nakhichevan and much more were part of Armenian Highlands for more than 5 thousand years. They belong to Armenians and Armenia. Therefore, the European community, USA and Russia who are also Christian like us, must understand the dangers that Armenians face in the area. The big powers should sympathize, know our history and act with morality towards Armenians and our rights to our anscestral homeland and our will to survive as a peaceloving nation in the caucasus.
