YEREVAN (RFE/RL)–Armenia warned Azerbaijan on Thursday against pushing through the United Nations General Assembly a fresh resolution that accuses Yerevan of occupying Azerbaijani territory and obstructing a peaceful resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
The draft resolution, which the General Assembly is expected to discuss on September 9, upholds the right of Azerbaijanis “expelled” from Karabakh and Armenian-controlled territories surrounding it to return to their homes. It also urges the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe to send a fact-finding mission to the conflict zone that would investigate the conflicting parties’ compliance with “international humanitarian law.”
Armenian Foreign Ministry spokesman Tigran Balayan told RFE/RL’s Armenian service that the document, if adopted, would cause “serious damage” to international efforts to end the Karabakh conflict. Armenian diplomats are now trying to prevent its passage, Balayan said, adding that Yerevan continues to believe that no international bodies except the OSCE Minsk Group should get involved in the conflict’s resolution.
“There is no way it won’t pass,” said Aleksandr Arzumanian, an opposition leader who headed the Armenian mission at the UN in the early 1990s. “The General Assembly statutes are such that even if five countries vote for and all others abstain, a resolution is deemed adopted. In such cases, most countries usually abstain.”
This is what happened in March 2008 when the General Assembly backed a similar Azerbaijani-drafted resolution. It referred to Karabakh as an internationally recognized part of Azerbaijan and demanded an “immediate, complete and unconditional withdrawal of Armenian forces from occupied Azerbaijani lands.”
Only 39 UN member states, most of them affiliated with Organization of Islamic Conference, voted for it, while over 150 other nations abstained or did not vote. The latter included the United States, Russia and France, the three co-chairs of the Minsk Group.
That resolution was touted as a “great diplomatic victory” by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev. The Armenian government rejected it and accused Baku of seeking to derail the peace process.
Who cares? Israel has been ignoring UN resolutions since its creation. They don’t seem to be doing to badly.

What about the pograms in sumgait and Baku. Are the Armenians aloud to return back to their ancestral homes in main land Azerbaijan. They started this. We didn’t. If they persue this it will be very very costly for them.
In the light of how the UN vote on Kosovo was hailed, I am dismayed at how the Islamic nations proclaim the principle of self-determination against Serbia in one case and adopt the opposite principle of territorial integrity against Armenia in the other.
It seems to me that the only principle they adhere to is the principle of Islamic vs. non-Islamic animosity.
The more I see this kind of votes in the world body’s the more I feel that the rest of world must confront the Islamic states on their record of criticizing the rest of the world about universal principles while they openly and wantonly violate every such universal principle in their own lands and on other nations.
And Armenians should care because?????? How about 20 countries that recognize the Genocide? To what good has it done so far? Or the Illegal blockade by Turkey? How about the treaty of Sevres? How about the pogroms in Baku and Sumgait? How about the destruction of the ancient grave stones? How about bringing up the fact that Karabagh was given to Azeris by the Russians in the first place and therefore was never Mongol lands? How about the fact that Azeri’s STARTED THE WAR AND LOST?
The Armenians need to start talking in these terms. In fact they need to be very harsh against a country that tried to liquidate the Armenian population and lost. A country that today still talks of war. The Armenians need to bring up the fact that Azeri’s started the war and lost. That these are liberated Armenian lands period and will never be returned!
This is ONLY a resault of WEAK POLITICS from the Armenian side.
I SWEAR that a dog would rule Armenia better.
Walla bravo to Azerbaijan, they are lying trough everything and they are comming this far, and what are WE doing ? Well nothing but sleeping. SHAME ON US and our LEADERS.
To qoute one of my favorite TV shows “What was ours is ours again” can any one name the show? Hint: we even got an honnerable mention by name in another eposode.
Are these people serous? Will all of you be on the front lines of such a war to die? If such a war happens you can be sure of on thing, both Armenia and Azerbaijan will both lose, with their economies and infrastructures destroyed and their people dying of starvation and disease with masssive war debts crippling both countries economies for years to come. The winners will be the big international banks and arms manufacturers.
So yes keep this attitude and see most if not all you relatives die for the profits of the banks and arms manufacturers.
Either work out a deal both sides can live with or face this alternative. From the comments on this site it appears that the big international banks and arms companies stand to be the big winners.
