Bozigian Continues Global Teaching Travels

Tom Bozigian has visited most continents throughout the world presenting master classes and seminars in Armenian song and dance. In Asian countries, his favorite, Armenian music, dance and hand movements are very attractive to the participants. Classically trained students especially seek out Tom’s classes to experience this unique style of dance. He leaves for London March 3 for 10 days of teaching organized by the Armenian Cultural Association of London. Most of his tours include non-Armenian dance organizations who co-sponsor his visits.

Bozigian began his Armenian dancing in Fresno, CA at a variety of gatherings during late 1940’s. Armenian immigrants moved to Fresno, and they represented most of the folk regions of both Western and Eastern Armenia. Tom says,”The abundance of styles always presented a challenge. And rhythms varied from the Black Sea (Hemshen region)) to the eastern shores of Lake Van (Vaspurakan). I always sought out the Pan-patriotic Union National Conventions wherever they were held.”

Bozigian’s annual sojourns to Armenia have continued this tradition for him. Together with Professor Artush Karapetyan, a different region of Armenia is decided on and visited. Older villagers are sought out and interviewed. Song and dance is the priority. This year’s target region is Goris because news was received that there are established families of Daron Armenians in villages outside Goris.

In Southern California Tom is occupied with a variety of Armenian cultural activities. His orchestra plays for all events. Especially popular is his Davul/Clarinet duo which brings in the bride and groom. His new 8-week Armenian/Greek dance class begins at Glendale Civic Auditorium January 26. Wedding parties utilize the beginner’s level to prepare for the event. Visit or call 562/941-0845.
