ANKARA (Hurriyet Daily News)—Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu will meet with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Saturday on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference.
Davutoglu is scheduled to discuss with Clinton his recent meeting with Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim Bin Jaber al-Thani and exchange views on regional developments, a diplomatic source told Hurriyet on condition of anonymity.
“We’ve exchanged our views with Qatar on the turmoil in Egypt. However, there is no new dual initiative yet on the issue,” the source was quoted by Huriyet as saying.
“Other bilateral and regional issues such as Iraq, Israel and Iran could be discussed in tomorrow’s meeting,” the same source said. Clinton was scheduled to visit Ankara this week, but the turmoil in Egypt led her to postpone the program.
According to Hurriyet, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan discussed the situation in Egypt with US President Barack Obama in a telephone call on Sunday, in which he reportedly said Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak should resign.
Davutoglu confirmed that Turkey and the U.S. have parallel views on Egypt, noting, “great minds think alike,” in an interview with Hurriyet Friday. “Turkey and the U.S. had parallel attitudes on developments in Egypt, since all parties considering the future of people in the region shared the same idea,” he said. “It should not be perceived as an external interference.”
“The statement of Mubarak is not enough. There should be an action plan and people in Egypt should perceive it, so that the tension can decrease,” Davutoglu added.
