GLENDALE—The Chamlian Armenian School announced that on Saturday, April 16, of the 11 students selected to compete at the Los Angeles County Science Fair, five were selected to move on to the State Science Fair in the final round, which takes place on May 2 and 3. The school marks this as a great achievement for its students, as they had to compete against students from 32 different counties in the state.
Hagop Margossian, Talar Kassabian, Leona Abrahamian, Mathew Hartounian and Vahe Yacoubian will represent Chamlian at the State Science Fair.
On May 2 and 3, the selected students will join more than 900 middle and high school students from the state’s top public and private schools to compete at the 60th annual California State Science Fair at the Science Center in Los Angeles.
The projects will span 22 categories, ranging from aerodynamics/hydrodynamics to zoology, and will be judged in two age divisions by a volunteer pool of more than 300 scientists and engineers from the private industry and higher education.
A total of $50,000 in cash prizes will be awarded to the winners of the California State Science Fair, along with additional awards and scholarships funded by private organizations and corporations. The honors will include the top four winners in each category and division, as well as the project, student, teacher of the year, and special recognition awards.
Chamlian Armenian School congratulated its students and commends them for their hard work and dedication! The school also extends its gratitude to Lida Gevorkian, the school’s Science Fair Coordinator, for her unwavering commitment in preparing the students for the 2011 Science Fair.
Hagop Margossian, 8th grader from Chamlian Armenian School won 1st Place in Applied Chemistry with his project titled “Enzyme-catalyzed Reactions- What Affects Their Rates? What Inhibits It?” Talar Kassabian, 7th grader, won 2nd Place in Animal Biology with his project “Fruit Flies on the Radical Track Age Fast and Die Young.” Leona Abrahamian, 8th grade, received a 3rd Place medal in Microbiology for “Hand Washing vs. Sanitizer.” Matthew Hartounian, 7th grader’s Ecology project won an Honorable Mention medal and is titled ” Los Angeles River Pollution.” Vahe Yacoubian, 7th grade, received an Honorable Mention in Animal Physiology with “Having Fun Burning Calories.”
