YEREVAN—The 33-year-old son of Armenia’s late Prime Minster Andranik Margarian was unanimously elected Tuesday as Yerevan’s new mayor by the city council, also known as the “Council of Elders.”
Taron Margarian was nominated by President Serzh Sarkisian, whose Republican Party of Armenia holds a majority in the city council, after the abrupt resignation earlier this month of the former Yerevan Mayor, Karen Karapetian, who had been in office since this spring.
On Monday, Parliament Speaker Hovik Abrahamian made his intention to resign official. He has said he is moving on to head the campaign apparatus of the Republican Party ahead of the June parliamentary elections.
November began with a series of high-ranking officials being reshuffled. Among them Armenia’s police chief Lieutenant-General Alik Sargsian was unexpectedly fired earlier this month and immediately replaced by President Sarkisian by Deputy Defense Minister Vladimir Gasparian.
The president’s aid and son-in-law, Mikael Minassian also left his post earlier this month, indication that he will work “side-by-side” with Abrahamian on the parliamentary elections.
