YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–A group comprised of 20 French intelligentsia representatives is currently visiting Armenia. The visit was initiated by the French "Voyageurs du Monde" and Armenian "Levon Travel" travel agencies. The group is led by well-known professor of Armenian Studies Yves Ternon. The visit was also promoted by the "L’Histoire" magazine which publishes articles on the history of various peoples.
This visit slightly differs from usual travels. While visiting Armenia’s picturesque sites–the representatives of the French intelligentsia deliver lectures about Armenia and the places they visit.
For instance–chief editor of the "L’Histoire" magazine Pierre Chouvan delivered a lecture "Architecture of Armenia" at the court of the Geghard monastery which is carved in a rock and considered to be a masterpiece of architecture of the 12th-13th century. At one of the monastery’s halls the group also had an opportunity to attend a concert of medieval sacred music.
At the Genocide museum–Yves Ternon–authors of the "Armenia’s: History of a Genocide," briefly told about the history of the genocide of Armenia’s perpetrated by the government of Young Turks.
Within the framework of the visit–French delegates also met with the chairman of the parliamentary committee on foreign relations Armen Khachatrian. The sides noted the importance of the fact that the Genocide of Armenia’s was recognized by the National Assembly of France and expressed hope that this resolution will be endorsed by the French Senate too.
A group of French intellectuals and representatives of the Armenian community in France–arrived in Armenia October 8 and held a meeting with the members of the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign Relations. Committee Chairman Armen Khachatrian informed the guests about the newly elected Parliament and expressed optimism that Armenia’s legislative body will do everything possible to uphold democratic traditions in Armenia and provide guarantees for human rights protection.
