YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan) – During an extended session of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia on Monday–well-known academician Sergey Hambartsoumian was honored on his 75th birthday. Present during the celebrations were numerous members of Armenia’s intellectual community–as well as Hambartsoumian’s students and colleagues.
Hambartsoumian’s achievemen’s were highlighted during the event– and his findings in the development of new directions in the field of mechanics of deformation of solids were emphasized by his colleagues. The scientist–who has in recent years developed several theories with both academic and practical values–was awarded a diploma as the republican prize winner. The award–which is given to best works in the field of mechanics of thin sided systems and their interaction with various physical fields–consists of a $25,000 grant–given out every three years.
Several dignitaries and national figures–among them–Armenian National Academy of Sciences Fadey Sargssian–Minister of Education and Sciences Artashes Petrossian–Rector of the Yerevan State University Radik Martirossian–Rector of the Yerevan Polytechnic University Yuri Sargssian and the Rector of the Armenian Pedagogical Institute–Gevorg Baghdassarian–were at hand to congratulate Hambartsoumian.
