Aliyev Blasts West Over Karabakh

Azerbaijan's president, Ilham Aliyev

Urges international sanctions on Armenia

BAKU (RFE/RL)—Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has blamed Armenia for the continuing impasse in the Nagorno-Karabakh peace process and accused the international community of using double standards against his country.

Chairing a cabinet meeting in Baku at the weekend, Aliyev condemned the West for not imposing economic sanctions against Armenia and for maintaining contacts with Karabakh’s leaders.

“The mediators had some optimism late last year but it is proving misplaced,” he said in remarked posted on his website. “Today we can again see that Armenia is simply stalling for time and trying to preserve the ‘no-war-no-peace’ situation, while the international mediators are unfortunately not exerting serious pressure on them.”

Armenian leaders will brush aside these claims, having already accused Aliyev of torpedoing a Armenian-Azerbaijani summit that was planned for the beginning of this year. The summit was delayed by a January upsurge in ceasefire violations in the conflict zone, which followed a reported Azerbaijani incursion on Karabakh Armenian army positions. The U.S., Russian and French mediators are reportedly seeking to arrange Aliyev’s fresh meeting with President Serzh Sarkisian on the sidelines of a European Union summit in Prague later this month.

“Thousands of Azerbaijani citizens were killed. A genocide was perpetrated against us. But no sanctions are imposed on Armenia as a result,” Aliyev told his ministers.

“Why?” he asked. “How long will we be facing these double standards? What is the reason for that? Why are the leaders of the self-proclaimed Nagorno-Karabakh Republic not suffering from sanctions?”

Aliyev added that Baku has been demanding that Western nations stop issuing entry visas to Karabakh Armenian leaders visiting the United States and Europe on a regular basis. “They go there, hold illegal telethons and raise money,” he complained. “They then use that money against us.

“Their ‘leaders’ are received in leading Western countries. They are issued visas, they open representations there, make trips. Why?”

A genocide was perpetrated against Azerbaijan? Really? When did that happen? Meanwhile the idiots in Baku are denying the Armenian Genocide, an actual genocide actually took place? It’s completely laughable.

We need a strong leader with atitude that stands up and points the Azeri sultan at the true facts infront of the whole world.

We gain strength, and courage, and confidence by each experience in which we really stop to look fear in the face… we must do that which we think we cannot.

Based on historical realities going back centuries, and democratic principles of self-determination, the majority of the residents-citizenry of Nagorno-Karabakh [who affectionately call their ancestral land “ARTZAKH]” have legally expressed their natural and rightful preference for independence from Azerbaijan – even association with Armenia – during the last waning years of the Soviet Union, legally and lawfully. It was the Azerbaijanis that initiated aggression against the newly established Armenian government of Nagorno-Karabakh, and even barbarously massacred ethnic Armenian citizens residing in Azerbaijan at the time. It was unfortunate that a minimal number of Azeris might have been killed in the crossfire. It’s bizarre that Aliyev finds it natural to use oil revenues for propaganda and bribing foreign countries to side with Azerbaijan’s un-rightful claims, whereas complains when Diaspora Armenians try to raise money from within their compatriots – calling it “hold[ing] illegal telethon s and raise money. Then they use that money against us”. It is Azerbaijan’s threatening posture and domineering desire that is forcing Armenians to spend money for their defense against aggression. It sure was preferable for Armenians to live in peace and security – let alone civilized mode of neighborly good relations (including with that of Turkey), and spend available meager funds for citizens’ education and general welfare. Unfortunately, even some progressive Western countries are not pressuring Azerbaijan (as well as Turkey) to behave fairly and rightly commensurate with civilized modes of international relations vis-à-vis Armenian, Nagorno Karabakh, and Diaspora Armenians!

I hate these bastard… Look at the size of his nose . Surely the Borat star needs to make a movie and mock this jerk and his idiotic people. In Armenia yes there might be corruption , but Azerbaijan is like Saudi Arabia , one family rule and the people are so uneducated that they don’t understand that or cannot do anything about it. As you read above what he mentioned , How do Europeans actually take this guy for real ? His a psycho that needs help with his Armenia-phobia ways .

    Why?????
Because Mr. Alyev , Gharabagh is a sovereign country home for a lot of Armenians living on that land for thousands of years.
That’s why, you didn’t get the memo.
Blame your ministers for that, the whole world got it.
And please do not and I repeat do not use the word GENOCIDE, you BARBARIAN.

Der Sultan is getting a bit desperate, he promised that he’d raise the Azeri military budget until it was larger than the entire Armenian state budget. Yet Armenia still holds the military advantage (thanks to free Russian weaponry and overall better quality soldiers). And now the oil and gas exports are dwindling for Azerbaijan, and Aliyev is screwed. So he’ll keep pounding his chest for his domestic audience.
