SAN DIEGO–The Armenian National Committee of San Diego County (ANC-SDC) hosted a special evening to commemorate the 93rd Anniversary of the Armenian Genocide on Thursday, April 24th at the University of California San Diego (UCSD). The event featured remarks from Archpriest Father Datev Tatoulian and prominent attorney Mark Geragos who discussed legal perspectives on the Genocide.
"This event was a remarkable tribute to the past and served to educate the Armenian and non-Armenian community about the Armenian Genocide", stated the Master of Ceremonies, San Diego ANC Community Relations Director Sergey Arutyunyan.
This year’s commemoration was also celebrated by a proclamation of San Diego City Council on April 24th as Armenian Genocide Commemoration Day. Members of ANC-SDC have been joined by members of the community to visit several San Diego city council and Congressional District offices. Offices of elected officials included City Council members Donna Frye, Tony Young, Toni Atkins and Congressional Members Darrell Issa and Duncan Hunter.
"The San Diego City Council has taken an important and visible step in the recognition of the Armenian Genocide and we hope that other cities across the nation would have the moral discipline to take a stand in solidarity," stated ANC-SDC Chairman Armen Donigian. "This proclamation was a result of months of work dedicated to meeting with local officials," added Silva Sorkoszian.
The event concluded with a candle light vigil to wrap up the week’s activities which included a movie screening of "Screamers" at UCSD and the California State University of San Diego (SDSU).
ANC of San Diego County advocates for the social, economic, cultural, and political rights of the city’s Armenian American community and promotes increased Armenian American civic participation at the grassroots and public policy levels. It is the voice of this vibrant community which advances and enriches San Diego.
