ANCA ‘Troubled’ by Defense Secretary Choice

Former Senator Chuck Hagel is said to be nominated for Defense Secretary post

WASHINGTON—The Armenian National Committee of America said it was “troubled” by President Obama’s potential defense secretary nominee Chuck Hagel’s position on the Armenian Genocide, reported commentarymagazine.com.

“We remain troubled by former Senator Hagel’s acceptance of Ankara’s gag-rule on American honesty about the Armenian Genocide – the still unpunished crime against a Christian nation that continues to define Turkey’s present-day policies toward Armenia and much of the region,” ANCA Executive Director Aram Hamparian said in an emailed statement to Commentary.

As Senator, Hagel has opposed official U.S. government recognition of the Genocide.

“What happened in 1915 happened in 1915. As one United States Senator, I think the better way to deal with this is to leave it open to historians and others to decide what happened and why,” then-Senator Hagel told a group of Armenian reporters during a trip to Armenia in 2005.

“The fact is that this region needs to move forward,” Hagel added. “We need to find a lasting, just peace between Turkey and Armenia and the other nations of this region. I am not sure that by going back and dealing with that in some way that causes one side or the other to be put in difficult spot, helps move the peace process forward.”

Hamparian told Commentary that the ANCA objected to the argument that official U.S. recognition of the genocide would hinder peace between Turkey and Armenia.

“As much as Erdogan and his allies might like, the ‘lasting, just peace between Turkey and Armenia’ that Chuck Hagel seeks cannot be built on Genocide denial. The U.S. and the international community must set an example by condemning the Armenian Genocide — and speaking out against all genocides, wherever and whenever they occur,” said Hamparian.

This fool is an opportunist… Is that what US tells Azeri’s about Artsak or buys time to get all the oil out before justice will be done… Brits and Americans Foreign policy is same EXPLOIT EXPLOIT EXPLOIT until nothing is left to EXPLOIT or a revolution happens in that state (of exploitation) perfect example Latin America being exploited by US. ‘What do you have to offer?” I wonder what Jews offered the West to get Israel? Was it supposed 6 million deaths or something else?

George is saying a reasonable thing; there is a common sense in it. I guess, he’s right on the money. The US would not hesitate to sacrifice Armenia and The Armenian Genocide, just to appease the criminal minded Turkey’s government. I’m wondering on, how NATO,s other members are tolerating the Hawkish Turkish governmet when Turkey itself is threatening other members of NATO; such as Cypress and Greece? Additionally, Turkey has threatened Israel, too. Shouldn’t NATO kick out Turkey out of the membership?

I think Senator Chuck Hagel is a reasonble man, if we can convince him, that he is on a
wrong path, and if Armenia can strategically overshadow or provide more lurative technological
breakthroughs than Turkey and Azerbaijan, then he would shift his positioning to our side.
    This is pure Realpolitik!!!
