Evening-Long Gathering Brings Together ANCA-WR Supporters With California Governor
GLENDALE–The Armenian National Committee of America Western Region–with the generous collaboration of Mr. and Mrs. Varand and Houri Melkonian–hosted an intimate dinner gathering with California Governor Gray Davis and his wife Sharon Davis. The event–which took place on Saturday–March 24–brought together long-time ANCA-WR supporters–ANC-PAC members–as well as community benefactors to spend several hours with Governor Davis at the LaCaada/Flintridge home of Mr. and Mrs. Melkonian.
The ANCA-WR dinner in honor of Governor and Mrs. Davis was intended to provide the opportunity for California’s highest public elected official to interact with Armenian American community leaders–while also becoming familiarized with a number of issues of concern to the more than 500,000 Armenian Americans living in the Golden State. Guests dined and spent more than 4 hours discussing a variety of concerns with Governor Davis–who rotated among dinner tables to ensure that all guests had an opportunity to speak with him.
Upon his arrival–Governor and Mrs. Davis spent time speaking with guests during a cocktail reception–where attendees had a chance to be photographed with the Governor. Following the cocktail hour–guests were treated to a multi-course dinner–which lasted for a majority of the evening.
The dinner reception was highlighted by brief remarks delivered by the evening’s host Varand Melkonian–ANCA-WR Chairman Steven J. Dadaian–and Governor Gray Davis. In his remarks–Melkonian recognized the importance of the evening in continuing the long-standing friendship between Governor Davis and the ANCA-WR–as the largest Armenian-American grassroots organization in California.
ANCA-WR Chairman Steven J. Dadaian thanked the attendees for their support of the ANCA-WR and emphasized the significance of the evening’s gathering in the political life of the Armenian American community of California–while at the same time recognizing the ever-increasing mutual respect and admiration between the ANCA-WR and Governor Davis.
"Governor Davis has been a long time supporter of the international recognition of the Armenian Genocide as a crime against humanity," explained Dadaian. Governor Davis’ principled stance in signing into law a measure–which enabled Genocide survivors to file actions in California courts for unpaid life insurance policy benefits from the time of the Armenian Genocide."
Governor Davis in his remarks to the attendees thanked Mr. and Mrs. Melkonian and the ANCA-WR for the opportunity meet with long-time Armenian American leaders. At the same time Governor Davis recognized the service of the ANCA-WR and thanked the ANC for its decades’ long leadership in California–particularly in the realm of community and political activism.
"Our guests–including Governor and Mrs. Davis–I am certain–enjoyed their time renewing old friendships–and getting reacquainted with each other," explained ANCA-WR Executive Director Alex Sardar. "This was a unique opportunity for Armenian American leaders to speak with the Governor of California on issues that directly affect our community–and the interaction provided for a healthy and enthusiastic exchange of ideas–in addition to an enjoyable social atmosphere."
