GLENDALE–Anush Simonyan, a summer intern at the Armenian National Committee of America-Western Region (ANCA-WR) has been participating in the ten week internship program which is approaching its final week. Along with the other interns of the program, Anush will be expected to complete both individual and group projects assigned by the staff of the ANCA-WR.
Simonyan decided to participate in this organization because she feels it is important to promote the Armenian Cause and raise awareness about Armenian issues in America. Her desire to be a part of this work originated from the fact that growing up she was very detached from Armenians. So, she was not well informed of Armenian concerns in society.
“I find that through this organization I can give back to the Armenian community and hopefully reconnect myself with that community,” commented Simonyan. Serving as her drive is the intent to give back to her community and also grow as an individual. “With this internship I am hoping to break out of my comfort zone, engage with different people and groups in society, and ultimately improve my communication skills,” said Simonyan.
She has been involved in other groups promoting causes and raising awareness about issues in society. She assisted the Ambassadors, which is a group in Los Angeles City College (LACC) with several of their events. She worked very closely with them in planning events and recruiting volunteers for these events such as the Downtown Women’s Center and a beach cleanup in Torrance. Anush was also an active member of the Armenian Student Association of Los Angeles City College, in which she worked with fellow Armenians to raise awareness and educate people of the Armenian background and culture.
Being a second year college student at LACC, Anush is getting ready to transfer to California State University, Los Angeles this coming fall. Although she is transferring as an English major with an emphasis on World Literature, she has yet to find a career best suitable to her. She is hopeful that her experience in this internship will lead or inspire her to the career of her dreams.
The Armenian National Committee of America-Western Region is the largest and most influential Armenian American grassroots advocacy organization in the Western United States. Working in coordination with a network of offices, chapters, and supporters throughout the Western United States and affiliated organizations around the country, the ANCA-WR advances the concerns of the Armenian American community on a broad range of issues.
