LOS ANGELES–More than 70 people filled Mateo’s Restaurant in West Los Angeles–Monday as part of an ANCA-WR gathering. Among those present were San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown–Jr.–Los Angeles City Council President John Ferraro–State Senator Jim Costa and former California State Assembly Majority Leader Walter Karabian. The dinner was organized to kick off the 1997 Armenian National Committee of America-Western Region Annual Banquet.
Special honorees of this year’s banquet–which will take place on December 12–1997–at Avedissian Hall–are Walter Karabian and Mayor Willie Brown. Karabian will receive the Man of the Year Award and Brown will receive the Freedom Award.
"The ANCA-WR is extremely pleased to honor two outstanding public servants at this year’s banquet," stated Armand Keosian–Chairman of the Board of the ANCA-WR. "Walter’s and Mayor Brown’s contributions to the Armenian-American community are far too numerous to recount and a mere mention of their tireless efforts certainly does not do them justice," added Keosian.
"However–one need only look at the unprecedented ticket demand for this banquet–which has already exceeded last year’s sold out event–to understand the high esteem these distinguished gentlemen are held in by our community. In fact–I urge anyone interested in attending this affair to contact the ANCA-WR office immediately to reserve space since available tickets simply will not last much longer," he concluded.
