On Monday–His Holiness Aram I Catholicos of the Holy See of Cilicia–awarded the title of "Cilician Knight" to United Nations Under Secretary Benon Sevan.
The grand ceremony was held in the Bifkaia Seminary. Present at the ceremony were representatives from the three Lebanese-Armenian denominations–governmental ministers and representatives–Armenia’s Ambassador to Lebanon Arman Navasartian–representatives from political parties and other governmental and private organizations.
The opening speech was given by the Seminary’s Principal Doctor of Divinity–Shahan Sarkissian who presented Benon Sevan’s biography. In his speech–Aram I made three key points–Armenian nationality–simplicity and diligence–three ideals which represent and continue to make Bevon Sevan’s life exemplary during his work with the United Nations for more than forty years.
At the commencement of his speech–His Holiness gave the title of "Cilician Knight" to Sevan. Sevan thanked Aram I–and gave his profound gratitude to the Patriarchate as a whole who has a fundamental role throughout the entire Diaspora. Sevan also remembered the days that Armenia was missing from the nations which composed the United Nations–and remembered proudly the day that Armenia too joined that rank of nations. Sevan concluded his speech with his promise to continue serving his homeland and its goals to the best of his abilities
