DETROIT–In the context 1700 anniversary–organized by the Eastern Prelacy–His Holiness Aram I–Catholicos of the Holy See of Cilicia–visited the Armenian community in Detroit on October 9–2000. During his brief stay in Detroit–His Holiness presided an ecumenical ceremony at St. Sarkis Church. Present were representatives of Roman Catholic–Anglican–Evangelical–and other sister churches of the area. The keynote speaker was Dr. Thomas Bird of the New York University.
The closing remarks were made by His Holiness–who spelled out those significant aspects of the life and witness of The Armenian Church. The same day–a banquet was organized in honor of His Holiness. Hundreds of parishioners and representatives from the political and diplomatic community attended the event. In his closing remarks–Aram I highlighted the major part that the Armenian Church played in the history of the nation.
The next day–the consul of General of Lebanon gave a reception in the honor of His Holiness. The community leaders and also the representatives of other Lebanese communities attended the reception. During his stay in Detroit–His Holiness had several meetings with community leaders. Accompanying His Holiness were the Prelate of Eastern US and Canada Archbishop Oshagan Choloyan–Vicar of Canada Bishop Khajag Hagopian–Vary Reverend Krikor Chiftjian–member of Central Executive Council Nazareth Karakashian and Zohrab Tazian.
The information department of the Armenian Catholicosate of Cilicia has announced that on the occasion of the visit of His Holiness Aram I to the Detroit Armenian Community–John and Rose Manoogian have donated $100,000 to the Armenian Catholicosate of Cilicia. A special fund in the name of John and Rose Manoogian will be established with this generous contribution. The income from this fund will be used towards the preparation of the clergy in the Armenian Catholicosate Seminary in Antelias–Lebanon.
The Manoogians are well-known and highly respected community leaders. For many years–John Manoogian has assumed important responsibilities in the Ford Motor Company. He has been very active in the Armenian community and the church–and has served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of St. Sarkis Armenian Apostolic Church in Dearborn–Michigan for several years. Recently–the Manoogians made a major contribution to St. Sarkis–which was used to build an annex containing additional classrooms and other administrative facilities. St. Sarkis will use these facilities for Sunday school and other education programs. His Holiness Aram I has previously honored the Manoogians with the designation of "Prince and Princess of Cilicia."
