STEPANAKERT—Nagorno-Karabakh Republic President Bako Sahakian on Sunday bestowed the Primate of the Artsakh Diocese Archbishop Parkev Martirossian with the “Artsakh Hero” medal, the highest honor bestowed in the republic.

Sahakian cited Archbishop Martirossian’s devoted service to the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic in bestowing the “Golden Eagle Order,” thus granting the archbishop the highest honorary title of the “Hero of Artsakh.” This honor coincided with the Artsakh-wide celebration of 25th anniversary of the re-establishment of the Artsakh Diocese.

Sahakian was also on hand Sunday for the festivities marking the 25th anniversary of the Artsakh Diocese, which took place at the Gandzasar Monastery.

A celebratory Mass was said at the Gandzasar Monastery to mark the Diocese's 25th anniversary

In his remarks, Sahakian highlighted the role of the Armenian church in the life of the people of Artsakh, adding that with the involvement of the church it would have been impossible to survive, keep our national identity and traditions and achieve victories.

President Sahakian characterized Archbishop Martirossian as an outstanding cleric and a public figure who was among the figures symbolizing Artsakh, adding that he continued his heroic deeds of the great leaders of the historic Gandzasar.

Chairman of the National Assembly Ashot Ghoulyan, Prime Minister Ara Haroutyunyan, as well as other officials, guests from Armenia and abroad took part in the celebrations.
